The sixth emperor Tyrellan was also known as the Mad Emperor.

Up until Tyrellan each Emperor had used the awesome power of the Spear of Carris in great engineering works for the Empire, or in battle.

Tyrellan, a brilliant Sorcerer, become obsesed with the secrets of the Spear. He began to insist he be addressed as Carris. His actions become increasingly violent until, after many unexplained, yet gruesome deaths, his sons intervened. He was forcibly separated from the Spear while sleeping, and soon took ill, becoming lucid only in his last dying moments.

He was the first to insist the Spear of Carris carried a curse. Later Emperors used the weapon with care.
